Garmin + Walking Pad
Garmin not counting steps on your walking pad?
Garmin watches have excellent step tracking — for normal walking. Treadmill desk use is a different story.
Why it happens
The same root cause: stationary wrist
Garmin watches use wrist-based accelerometers to infer step count. The algorithm works by detecting the periodic swing of a walking arm. At a treadmill desk your hands stay on the keyboard — stationary — eliminating the wrist motion Garmin looks for.
At the slow pace of desk walking (1–3 km/h), even the residual wrist motion from footfalls can fall below Garmin’s detection threshold. The result is a significant undercount, or zero steps logged.
This isn’t a Garmin bug — it’s physics. The fix is to move the sensor to the ankle, where the step motion is actually happening.
