Distance and Calorie Estimates
What StepSprite measures directly
Section titled “What StepSprite measures directly”StepSprite’s direct measurement is steps.
That is the number the device is built around, and it is the most trustworthy metric in the system.
What StepSprite estimates
Section titled “What StepSprite estimates”StepSprite estimates:
- walking distance
- active calories
Those estimates are derived from your step data inside the app.
What the estimate uses
Section titled “What the estimate uses”The app can use:
- steps
- time
- your height, if you entered it
- your weight, if you entered it
- a stride override, if you entered one
If you leave those fields blank, StepSprite falls back to sensible defaults.
Why the numbers change with pace
Section titled “Why the numbers change with pace”StepSprite does not assume every step is the same length.
Recent builds make the estimate more pace-aware:
- slower walking shortens the estimated step length
- faster walking lengthens it
- the app keeps the adjustment within sane limits
That is better than using one fixed stride for every situation, but it is still an estimate.
Where you will see these numbers
Section titled “Where you will see these numbers”- inside the Workouts tab during and after a workout
- in the Stats tab
- optionally in Apple Health, but only if you turn those categories on
How to improve the estimate
Section titled “How to improve the estimate”- enter your height
- enter your weight
- add a stride override only if you already know what baseline stride you prefer
The honest version
Section titled “The honest version”Treat StepSprite like this:
- steps: authoritative
- distance: useful trend
- calories: useful trend
If you need lab-grade distance or energy data, StepSprite is not that product.
